Hooks that work: 7 ways to stop the scroll in the first second

On social, the first second decides everything. If your opening doesn’t earn attention, the rest of the video — however good — never gets seen. Here are seven hook formats we use again and again.

1. Lead with the result

Show the finished outcome first — the transformation, the final dish, the cleared room — then show how you got there.

2. Ask the question your audience is already asking

“Is it worth hiring a solicitor for a letter before action?” A good question makes the right people stop.

3. Call out the viewer

“If you run a small business in Swansea…” Naming your audience tells them this one is for them.

4. Break the pattern

Unexpected movement, a surprising visual or an unusual angle interrupts the scroll. Movement in the first frame beats a static shot.

5. Make a bold (true) claim

A strong point of view gets attention — as long as you back it up in the video.

6. Start mid-action

Skip the intro. Open in the middle of the moment and let the context catch up.

7. Use on-screen text

A short text hook works even with the sound off and reinforces what’s being said.

Test, don’t guess

The fastest way to find your best hooks is to test several versions of the same video. Keep the body the same, change the first second, and let the data tell you what works — especially in paid social.
