Lo-fi vs high-production: choosing the right social video for the job

“Should we shoot it on a phone or bring in a crew?” It’s one of the questions we hear most. The honest answer: it depends on the job the video needs to do.

When lo-fi wins

Lo-fi, phone-shot video feels native to TikTok and Reels. It’s fast to make, feels authentic and often blends into the feed better than polished content. It’s ideal for:

  • Behind-the-scenes and day-in-the-life content
  • Trends, reactions and quick tips
  • Founder-led and team-led videos
  • UGC-style ads

When to turn up the production

Higher production value earns its place when you need to impress, explain something complex or create a hero asset you’ll use for months. Think brand films, product launches, adverts and cinematic showcase content — like the supercar advert we shot for S.N. Luxury Car Hire.

The best approach is usually both

One well-planned shoot can deliver a hero film and dozens of short, native cuts. Plan the vertical edits, hooks and behind-the-scenes clips before the camera rolls and you’ll get far more from the same day.

Whatever you shoot, nail the basics

  • Hook in the first second
  • Shoot vertical (9:16) first
  • Add captions — lots of people watch with the sound off
  • Good light and clear audio matter more than the camera
  • End with one clear next step
